HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR GUTTERS
Clean Regularly
At least twice a year, do a full cleaning in spring and fall. More often if you have lots of trees nearby. This keeps rainwater flowing properly. Remove leaves, twigs, and debris to prevent clogs.
Check for Clogs
Run water through downspouts to make sure they're flowing freely. Use a hose or plumber's snake if needed. Use gloves and a small scoop or trowel. Start near the downspout and work your way back to avoid pushing clogs deeper in.
Inspect for Damages
Look for holes, cracks, rust spots, or sagging areas. Small issues can usually be sealed or patched with gutter sealant. Fix small issues before they grow.
Secure Them
Check that gutters are securely attached to your house. Tighten any loose screws, make sure gutters are firmly attached, and have a proper slope toward the downspouts.
Trim Nearby Trees
Cut back branches that hang over the roof. This reduces the amount of leaves, twigs, and seeds that fall into the gutters. Keeps leaves and debris from falling into the gutters.
Install Gutter Guards
These can help keep debris out and reduce how often you need to clean. Mesh screens or covers can help prevent debris buildup. They reduce cleaning needs but still need occasional checking.
Look for Water Overflow
After a rain, walk around your home and look for water spilling over the sides or pooling near the foundation. These are signs the gutters may be clogged or sloped incorrectly.
